Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Jefferson School City Center retains the historical features and character of this former African American school, but also includes state of the art upgrades including energy conservation and efficiency systems, hi-speed internet cabling, access control systems, elevators, park-like grounds, and convenient on-site parking with most spaces available in a newly built 2-level parking deck.

Jefferson School City Center is a dynamic structure honoring and building upon the school’s history as the premier educational and social center for generations of African Americans in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The City Center houses the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center that tells the story of Jefferson School, its alumni and illuminates other aspects of the African American experience in the Charlottesville/Albemarle community and beyond. In addition, the Heritage Center houses an arts and language academy as well as a genealogy lab.

The City Center remains home to the city’s Carver Recreation Center, which is fully renovated as a vibrant recreational center offering a rich array of recreational, health and fitness related activities for citizens in surrounding neighborhoods and throughout the city.

The City Center is home to seven other tenants offering a range of educational, social, health and recreational services for the community. These tenants serve diverse, multi-generational audiences and offer programs that compliment each other and the activities of the African American Heritage Center and Carver Recreation Center.
